At Phyllis Wheatley Community Center, we work to create educational, recreational, and restorative learning opportunities for the people who live in our North Minneapolis neighborhoods and the greater Twin Cities area. At Phyllis Wheatley, our services evolve quickly, always adapting and changing to keep pace with the ever-changing needs of our community. Our goal — To provide families with access to critical early childhood education, information and resources that exist to help, career skills training, and educational opportunities that can stabilize lives. Originally established in 1924 as a settlement house, PWCC has been a go-to resource for generations of African Americans for nearly a century. Prior to WWII, the center was a central fixture in North Minneapolis, providing a space for community in the midst of heavy racial discrimination and segregation. As the times changed, so did the PWCC mission and services areas. But there’s one thing that hasn’t changed — our commitment to serving our community. Today, Phyllis Wheatley Community Center provides a number of culturally responsive, quality programs that provide lifelong learning opportunities and family services for children, teens, and adults. Our commitment to our neighbors’ empowerment and belief in their many talents drives us, and our mission, each day.
